Hi Lo Tunic

34
I woke up today and I really really wanted to sew something.  So I did.  I had some floral linen that I really wanted to use to make a top for J.  Plus I had just downloaded the free Party Dress pattern that you get when you sign up for the Cottage Mama newsletter, so it was a match made in heaven.  I worked on it all morning and besides feeding and (kind of) supervising my child I did nothing else.  Good thing J was willing to comply.  She was pretty happy to play alone this morning.  The morning did not go by completely without incident however.  I won't go into the messy details but, it involved a dirty diaper and a curious toddler.  I didn't change it fast enough for her so she took matters into her own hands, literally.

I learned my lesson and put it away until nap time.  Overall this was a pretty easy and fast top to sew.  The pattern is great and you can't beat free!  I sewed up the 18 month size which a little roomy on J.  But that is fine with me because she won't grow out of it too soon.

This afternoon we did a little photo shoot.

I made a few small alterations to the original pattern.  I shortened the bodice by about 1/2 an inch and I shortened the skirt so it was tunic length.  I also knew that I wanted to make the tunic shorter in front and longer in the back, just to make it more interesting.

I really love the hi lo tops that you can find everywhere in women's clothing stores.  I haven't seen a toddler hi lo top, and that's a shame because I think they are cute on little girls.

I found four big brown buttons in my stash that worked perfectly.  I got hundreds, literally hundreds, of buttons from my grandma for Christmas because she just doesn't sew like she used to.  I was so excited!  I haven't had to buy buttons for months.

After about 15 minutes Jane started to lose interest...

So we decided to go inside.  I even bribed her with pound cake hence the mid-chew picture below.

In the end J won and the photo shoot was abandoned for toys.

At least she looks cute and stylish while she's wheeling that cart around.

I got the fabric from JoAnns and I might need to buy some more for myself.  I think this would look great in a peplum top for me.  Mother daughter matching shirts!  Yes!

In other news we bought a house.  We close at the end of May and we are so freakin' excited! Have an awesome weekend and happy sewing!
