What I've been up to

Blogging has been the last thing on my mind.  Actually sewing was too for about 4 months because my body is the WORST at being pregnant.  So much vomit! How did women do it 200 years + ago??  I have pills for nausea and I still wanted to crawl inside a cave and die.  Something pregnancy has taught me is that I can be tough if necessity demands it, but I definitely prefer not to be.  I could be awesome and productive and work through the morning sickness, but I would really rather not.  So J watched a ton of TV for 3 months, and I got really good at throwing up.  Pregnancy is definitely an experience I wouldn't trade for anything, but I prefer my babies out rather than in.  That being said, I'm feeling great now and I cannot wait to have this baby!

Way back at the beginning of fall, before I was pregnant, I sewed J another picnic top from Oliver + S. I found this cute linen at JoAnn's on sale and J really needed a new top.

Then I got pregnant and near death (jk, jk,  I kid, I kid) and I didn't make anything for awhile.  When Christmas rolled around I made J some Oliver + S Sleepover pajamas.  It is a great, easy pattern that came together quickly.  Which was good because I couldn't handle much more than that.

For Christmas my sister, Mary, bought me the Oliver + S Apple picking dress pattern.  I was so excited to try it out and decided to make a 6-12 mo size for a friends shower.  She is having her first little girl after 3 boys and I was excited to make her something girly.

This was a really fun pattern to make. I can't wait to make one for J!  The hardest part were the button holes.  I'm not very good at them and I was worried that I wouldn't sew them on straight. The sewing gods were merciful that day and all 8 button holes came out just right.

Shortly after that we found out we are having a BOY!  Which is probably why I decided to make the most girly dress I have made to date for Easter.  I'm excited to try my hand at some boy sewing, but I need to girl it up while I can.

I purchased this peachy blush fabric from JoAnn's to make a flower girl dress for J to wear at my sister's upcoming wedding. But, Michael, upon learning that the shade of blush used in the wedding would be a little different, convinced me to buy different fabric for that dress.  So, I sewed up a peach Easter dress for J but kept the original design I was going to use for the flower girl dress.

I used the Oliver + S Fairytale dress for this pattern, but I raised the bodice significantly.  I also made the armholes a bit wider.  I wanted it to have a more relaxed fit.

To say that J was excited about this dress would be the understatement of the century. When I would take breaks J was quick to keep me on task: "Mom, you need to sew my dress for me, sew it, sew it!".  She was always really excited to try it on during it's various stages of completion and would usually cry when I told her she needed to take it off so I could finish it.  When I did finally finish it she said "Oh mom, is that a dress for me? It is a pink princess dress, it's so beautiful!"

That night after we put her to bed she snuck out of her room to grab the dress which was hanging in my sewing room, and put it in her closet.  She could not wait to wear it to church today, and apparently twirled for her nursery teachers while telling them that it was her new Easter dress.
I mean how can you not want to make a twirly, pink, giant bowed, princess dress when you get a reaction like that?!

J got to wear the dress today because next week on Easter our church will be holding a worldwide General Conference.  It's where the leaders of our church, as well as our prophet, speak.  I can't wait to listen to General Conference and it will be so great to be able to hear their messages on Easter. Go to lds.org to learn more.

I learned a few things when I made this dress which is always nice.  I decided to do french seams for the first time to make sure the chiffon layers on the skirt looked extra neat.  I also had to sew a rolled hem which I had never done before.

I think the reason I have sewed 3 Fairytale dresses now is how awesome the construction is.  I really like how the pattern has you sew the lining bodice to the lining skirt and then to the seam of the outer fabric.  It makes it so neat and tidy inside.  I also really like the instructions for inserting the invisible zipper. They are really well written and specific and help me do it right every time.

Finally, here is an ultrasound picture of our cute little boy and a shameless selfie.  I'm 21 weeks now and have a decent bump at this point.

I hope you all have a wonderful Easter!!
