We celebrated A's First Birthday a week late. Get ready for picture overload. We had a really busy weekend on A's actual birthday so we did a mini party for him last Saturday and today we had the big party. I knew I wanted to sew something for A to wear to his birthday party. Almost 4 years ago I made this pink sequined dress for J.
Amidst all of the preparations and trips to Hobbit Lobby I found some cool ponte that was perfect for a birthday t-shirt for A. Not as fancy as a sequined dress, but you know, he is the second child ; ). Because it came together so fast I decided to make J a quick dress from some leftover Girl Charlee fabric. It's a cotton jersey blend. They don't have the fawn silhouette in grey and brown anymore, but they do have some other colors available.
Let's start with pics of the dress and then we can move onto the birthday boy.
I used the Anytime at all Tee pattern from Schwin designs in a 3T. I cut the shirt a little short and then cut out two rectangles that were twice as wide as the bodice. I sewed those together for the skirt and then I gathered it with 1/4 elastic and serged it to my bodice. I had intended to have the skirt hit just above the belly button, but I didn't measure or try it her on as I sewed. When I finally had her try it on we discovered it was a drop waist and just decided to go with it : )
Now for A. The theme of his party was cowboys and indians. You can see what he chose was forced to be.
Check out those baby blues...
This ponte knit from hobby lobby is awesome. Super soft and just stretchy enough so it's easy to get on and off, but still very sturdy and easy to sew with. I'm just loving the fabric selection they have these days.
The neckline is a ribbed cotton bamboo blend I had in my stash. This was also an Anytime Tee cut in an 18 month size with an inch added for length.
Now for the party. A's room is basically wild west themed so I emptied his room and scattered all the decor around the house.
Got that teepee at Hobby Lobby too. Just take my money Hobbit Lobby. Just take it all.
Banners, feathers, party stuff.
Triangles, feathers, more party stuff.
Swiss cow.
I kept the desserts relatively simple. I originally had ideas of making a giant cowboy hat, or teepee cake and intricately decorated sugar cookies. Yeah, that didn't happen. Went the rustic, no decoration route. It looked cute and didn't take all day.
Just cause it's fun to compare...here's J's cake from 4 years ago.
I found the idea for those marshmallow arrows on pinterest. They were really easy (J did most of the dipping actually), they tasted good, and required no baking. Win, win, win.
This sign actually took me longer than both desserts combined, hahaha. Worth it.
I gave the kids who attended a choice between a cowboy gun, or an Indian headband. It was about 75% little boys, so you can guess which item was more popular.
After dinner we opened presents. And by opened presents I mean that I sat in a chair while 20 children who were not A opened presents at my feet. I tried to get A involved but he just wanted to play with the first present of the night. A giant red ball.
So much joy.
Then we lit that lone candle and sang Happy Birthday to A while he stared longingly at the cake. This definitely isn't the first time he's had cake. I mean he is my son. He's well versed in the world of cake.
"Woah, wait a minute. Where is she taking the cake?"
"Ohhhh, here it is..."
testing it out...
Still modestly eating..
Yep, that's how you get it done buddy.
It was this slightly crazed yet happy look that told me that it was time to take the cake away.
BTW here is the difference between boys and girls. J on the left, A on the right.
And just like that the party was over and it was time for everyone to go home. Parties are always so fun but a little sad when they're over. So much prep for two hours of awesome and all your left with is a bunch of party decorations that you suddenly hate and way too much cake. The party was so fun though and we are so grateful to everyone who was able to come.
