Oh Halloween, how I love you. The excuse to spend too much money and too much time creating fun costumes is always welcome.
This year after much deliberation J choose to be Belle. She was sad that Michael and I were planning on going as Star Trek Enterprise crew members so I told her that her brother could be Gaston.
This dress took:
4 yards of gold costume satin
3 yards of a glittery stiff organza (layered over the gold fabric on the skirt, and the sleeves)
2 yards of the shimmery organza which I used to make the gathered sections on the outer skirt
1 1/4 yard of knit to line the inside back bodice and skirt lining
3 yards of tulle
10 inches of gold elastic
The back
J had a few requests for this dress. She said the sleeves needed to be off her shoulder just like Belle's dress, and she wanted to be able to pull it on without having to zip it. That last request turned out to be a little bit of challenge. I decided to shirr the back of the bodice to make it nice and stretchy.
I also used a stretchy knit to line the bodice and skirt to make sure that I didn't loose any stretching potential.
Instead of a normal bodice, this dress was made like a tank top with elastic for straps. The off the shoulder sleeves are big enough that she can pull it right over her head. Mission accomplished.
I think she hates it ; )
In case any of you are making a belle dress anytime soon here's a picture for you. It took 5 of those gathered sections to make the outside of the skirt. I had to cut them twice as long as my skirt. Jane has a tiny waist (18") and so I just cut them 10 inches wide at the top and about 15 inches wide at the bottom and about 50 inches long.
You can see that glittery gold organza better in the last 2 pictures. This dress got glitter everywhere. Including all over the fabric for A's costume.
A doesn't get a photo shoot because he cray and I want to keep my sanity today. These pictures are from last night at our church Halloween party. I could only snag pictures when he was distracted. He was on the move the whole night. 15 month olds are so busy.
His costume is completely out of knit.
It took:
1/2 yard red jersey knit
1/2 yard of black jersey knit
1/4 yard of mustard knit
1/2 yard of ivory knit
1/4 bag of polyfil for muscles
I drafted the muscle shirt and the red top using the anytime tee and I made the black leggings by tracing a pair of his pajama pants. Oh and the collar pattern piece came from the Oliver and S Sketchbook shirt. The belt was just thrown together with leftover fabric. It was pretty easy and came together quickly.
As you can see above this costume might not stand the test of time quite like J's . My serger needle broke halfway through and so the seams aren't finished, I had to hand sew part of the muscle shirt and I stink at hand sewing, and I haven't hemmed it. Let's be honest, it might not ever get hemmed because A will never wear this costume again, but J will probably wear the belle dress 1 million times amIright??
It might seem like A is getting the short end of the stick but I didn't even sew J a costume until she was 2, so he's actually ahead of the game in that department.
Glad that the Halloween sewing is done and now I can just sit back and enjoy the last few days before the holiday. Then I have to kick it back into gear to get some Christmas sewing done!
